HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Age Concern Knaresborough has been in existence since 1982 and it is interesting to see how it has evolved from its humble beginnings into the sucessful and vibrant organisation that it is today.

It all began rather by accident, when a group of mums found themselves chatting in the playground at Aspin Park Primary School, and were of the opinion that older people in Knaresborough needed more help and support than was available to them at that time.  The result of this was the introduction of a scheme which was named 'Helping Hands' and its first service was the provision of a Housebound Library Scheme.

Volunteers were recruited and they became increasingly aware of the problems faced by older people, and so with the help of Age Concern England, the new charity, Age Concern Knaresborough was established, followed by the opening of a Charity Shop in the town to help raise the money needed to provide a comprehensive range of services.

As the demand upon services grew it became apparent that more permanent facilities were needed and so the beginning of the new millenium saw the launch of an appeal to raise £500,000 to fund such a facility.  The culmination of all the work involved in raising this total was the opening in late 2002, of Cliff House, our purpose built Resouce Centre which became the hub of all the services and activities now provided by Age Concern Knaresborough, and the rest, as they say, is history!
